"Drink more water" is the oldest advice in wellness. It's also the most incomplete.
"Drink more water" is the oldest advice in wellness. It's also the most incomplete.
You've heard it your whole life. Drink more water. Eight glasses. Half your body weight in ounces. Carry the big flask.
And many people do. They refill it constantly. They add electrolytes. They hit their hydration goals. Yet they still feel foggy. Low. Dragging by 3 p.m. and reaching for something, anything, to push through.
The advice isn't wrong. It's just incomplete. And the part that's missing plays a large role in whether hydration works.
We asked ARMRA® Founder and CEO Sarah Rahal, MD, to break down what everyone gets wrong about hydration, and what your body actually needs to make use of the water you consume.
"Because we've turned it into a quantity problem. And it isn't.
People count ounces. They carry massive flasks. They track their intake like it's a performance metric. But the question isn't how much water you're drinking. The question is whether your body can actually use it.
We've come to treat water and hydration as if they're the same thing. They're not. Water is what you drink. Hydration is what your body does with it.
Water doesn't just pass through your body like a pipe. Every sip has to be absorbed by your gut, delivered to your cells, and put to work. If any part of that process isn't working well, you can keep drinking more water without getting the result you're looking for.
The goal isn't getting more water into your body. The goal is getting more value out of the water you're already drinking."

"Most people assume they're dehydrated because they aren't drinking enough water.
Sometimes that's true.
But often the issue is that the body isn't using water efficiently.
Your gut is one of the first places that process begins. Every sip of water, every mineral, every nutrient you consume has to cross that surface first. When the gut lining is healthy, absorption happens efficiently. When it isn't, the body has to work harder.
But hydration doesn't stop at the gut.
Water still has to reach your tissues, your organs, and ultimately your cells. Those cells need minerals to regulate fluid balance and energy to put that water to work.
That's why hydration is so much more than a drinking problem. It's a whole-body process."
"Real hydration requires more than water alone.
You need a gut that can absorb it. You need electrolytes that help regulate it. You need healthy cells that can use it. And you need the energy to put it to work..
The second one is marketed aggressively. The third one gets some attention. But the first one, the surfaces, the gut lining, is almost never discussed.
You can optimize your electrolytes perfectly. You can drink the best water. You can track every ounce. But if your body can't absorb it and your cells can't use it, you'll keep chasing hydration without ever fully getting there."

"Because it's invisible, and we're a culture that rewards visible effort.
Carrying the big water bottle is visible. Buying the expensive electrolytes is visible. Drinking more, doing more, adding more, these are legible behaviors. They feel like solutions.
The gut barrier doesn't have a marketing category yet.
The ability to absorb water isn't visible. The ability of your cells to use it isn't visible.
You can't taste those things. You can't count them. There's no ritual around them. So they get skipped.
But they're upstream of almost everything. They influence what you absorb, how your cells function, how efficiently you produce energy, and how well your body responds to the world around it.
When they're compromised, the downstream effects show up everywhere.
Hydration is one visible symptom of an invisible problem. The glass isn't where the solution lives."
"ARMRA starts where the hydration conversation doesn't: at the gut.
Before your body can use water, nutrients, minerals, or anything else you consume, it has to absorb them.
Colostrum evolved as life's first fuel for exactly this reason. Every newborn, regardless of species, faces the same challenge: a brand-new body that needs to become functional, fast.
The gut is where that process begins, but it doesn't end there.
Over 400 bioactive nutrients, growth factors, immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, and peptides work in concert to strengthen the gut barrier, reinforce the mucosal lining, support cellular health, and help the body maintain the resilience and communication that every system depends on.
You can't hydrate a body that can't absorb. And that's not a clever line, it's the biology.
Colostrum evolved as life's first fuel for exactly this reason. Every newborn, regardless of species, faces the same challenge: a brand-new gut that needs to become functional, fast. Colostrum is what builds that surface. Over 400 bioactive nutrients, growth factors, immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, peptides, working in concert to strengthen the gut barrier, reinforce the mucosal lining, and establish the gut barrier integrity that determines whether anything else you consume can actually be used.
ARMRA Colostrum delivers those same bioactives to build the foundation that helps your body absorb, utilize, and get more value from everything it consumes, including water, so your hydration routine can actually do its job.”*
