A closer look at the iron-binding protein found in colostrum and its role in whole-body health.
In recent years, many people have distanced themselves from dairy. But, it'd be a shame to shy away from lactoferrin, a protein naturally present in milk and in high concentrations in colostrum. (Notably, colostrum can have up to seven times more lactoferrin than mature milk.)
Often referred to as a "miracle molecule," lactoferrin is studied for its wide-ranging biological benefits, including protecting human cells at all stages of life, regulating DNA, and acting as an antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, and immunostimulatory (i.e., it has the capacity to stimulate an immune response).
It’s also revered for its distinctive ability to regulate iron, an essential but tightly regulated micronutrient, supporting the body in its homeostasis. Truly legen-dairy.

Lactoferrin has been shown to play an important role in multiple facets of your health, including:
Protecting against pathogens & oxidative stress
As the name suggests (lacto meaning milk and ferrin meaning iron), lactoferrin is an iron-binding milk protein. It helps balance iron levels in the body by limiting availability of iron needed by microorganisms to grow and reproduce, thereby significantly reducing their pathogenic potential. This ability to bind iron also has antioxidant effects, helping protect cells against oxidative stress.
Establishing & strengthening immune health
Lactoferrin is a key component of early milk and contributes to core immune development alongside other immune-supportive compounds like IgG and IgA. Lactoferrin’s benefits aren’t limited to infancy; when consumed orally, studies suggest it can reach the intestine and act on the microbiota and the immune system located at the gut walls, enhancing immune function as a result.
Supporting digestion & nutrient absorption
Lactoferrin influences the growth and activity of epithelial cells, the specialized, tightly packed cells that line the barriers of the body’s surfaces, like the digestive tract. By supporting the integrity and function of these barriers, it helps optimize digestive processes, nutrient absorption, and protects against pathogens and food allergens.
Supporting gut health
Lactoferrin acts as a prebiotic that supports the growth of beneficial gut bacteria in the digestive system. Research suggests that it may help restore microbial balance following antibiotic use and reduce both local and system inflammation associated with gut dysbiosis.
Promoting bone health
Emerging research has explored lactoferrin’s role in promoting osteogenesis (the process of bone formation) and inhibiting the osteolytic process (bone degeneration).

The FDA requires pasteurization processes on all milk products for food safety. The cheap and common way to do so? Use very high temperatures for a short period of time.
Ensuring temperatures never get high during pasteurization retains the integrity of colostrum and its bioactive nutrients, like lactoferrin, to:
